When it comes to sound tuning, the best place to start is at the beginning: with the power supply. The current coming out of the wall socket is often quite dirty and prevents connected audio components from delivering their full sonic potential. A power conditioner or mains filter allows source devices and amplifiers to reach their full potential. But this purification comes at a price – and it should be proportionate to the value of the audio system. For ambitious audiophiles who don't want to spend a fortune on sound improvement, AudioQuest has created the PowerQuest series: The power conditioners in this series are designed to offer the same fundamental filtering advantages as the more expensive power conditioners in AudioQuest's Niagara series, from which we've already had the Niagara 1200 and Niagara 3000 visit our lite editorial office. The PowerQuest series consists of five models. They possess various equipment and filter features, but all follow the basic AudioQuest approach of reducing so-called "noise" across a wide bandwidth during power cleaning – i.e., power anomalies that impair the performance of the devices and degrade the sound.

Following the 505 , we now have the 707, the flagship of the PowerQuest series, in our hands – and it immediately demonstrates its premium status with its appearance: The sleek, understated slim design of the chassis is entirely made of metal and finished in matte black. The slight overhang of the solid, black anodized aluminum front panel enhances the high-quality look. Measuring 10 x 43 x 380 centimeters, its dimensions conform to standard hi-fi dimensions. However, it also fits into a 19-inch rack, making it suitable for PA applications. This powerhouse occupies two rack units. The necessary mounting brackets are included. For ease of use in hi-fi or sound reinforcement systems, the on/off switch is conveniently located on the front panel. It centrally controls all seven outlets. Therefore, all connected components are simultaneously switched on and off with a single press of the switch. This is not only convenient but also saves energy.

While the connection options on the smaller 303 and 505 models are integrated directly into the rear panel, they are presented as separately mounted grounded outlets on the 707. The distribution of functions, however, remains the same: Three outlets are designed for integrated amplifiers, active speakers, or active subwoofers – i.e., for power-intensive components with variable power requirements. For these, the 707 is the only model in the series to offer an extra energy buffer: This buffer provides the connected amplifiers with power support during short-term power peaks in highly dynamic music or action-packed movies. The four other outlets are optimized for CD players, streamers, or TVs – i.e., for source devices with low, constant power requirements. These outputs are filtered separately – and here, too, the 707 demonstrates its premium position: In the 303, power filtering is achieved solely through push-pull filtering, which AudioQuest calls "Linear Filtering." The 505 also incorporates common-mode filtering. AudioQuest calls this more effective combination "Ultra-Linear Filtering". In the 707, this ultra-linear noise reduction is now even more effective: its filter circuit operates with a wider bandwidth.

But why do you even need a power conditioner? After all, all devices work just by plugging them into a wall socket with a simple power strip. That's true – but the power supplied this way is in a decidedly poor state. Its distortion is caused by, for example, neighboring industrial plants, but also by the electrical appliances in our own environment: washing machines and refrigerators, lamp dimmers, and charging or switching power supplies all feed interference into the grid, causing current spikes and voltage distortions known as differential-mode noise. In addition, there's common-mode noise: high-frequency radio frequency interference (RFI) affects the power cables of the devices, which are usually poorly shielded and act as antennas for electromagnetic radiation and radio interference. The RFI interference originates from external cell towers and the networked devices in our homes, such as Wi-Fi routers, mobile phones, and even the audio components themselves. Furthermore, they interfere with each other through their cable connections. These numerous disturbances cause noise, hissing and humming, they degrade the performance of the components and reduce sound quality, clarity and dynamics of the playback.

Power conditioners help combat this. They operate in various ways: The product range extends from active units that generate a completely new voltage to mains filters that clean the power supply using only a passive circuit. This is how the models in the PowerQuest series work, including the 707. First and foremost, it acts as a distribution point: With its power outlets, it provides seven components of an audio and/or AV system with a connection to the mains power supply. To prevent these devices from interfering with each other, the individual outlets of the 707 are not connected in series, but rather in a star configuration with its filter circuits. These outlets are also divided into two different sections. For wattage-intensive components with highly fluctuating power requirements, such as integrated amplifiers, power amplifiers, active loudspeakers, and active subwoofers, the focus is on immediate availability. In the filter circuit used here, the impedance and the associated phase delay must therefore be small to prevent current compression – the cause of anemic, thin, undifferentiated, sluggish amplifier sound. Because of the impedance minimization, these "high current" connections are also called "low-Z outlets".

To ensure prompt availability, the 707, the only high-current amplifier in the entire PowerQuest series, now offers an exclusive feature for these high-current outlets: In addition to its filtering capability, the workings of which AudioQuest does not explain in detail, it also possesses an energy storage system called "Transient Power Correction." Thanks to this power buffer, the 707 can instantly supply all amplifiers connected to the "High Current" section with a current of up to 45 amps for a maximum duration of 25 milliseconds. This is achieved by an impressive cylindrical storage unit located inside the 707 behind the filter circuit board. This battery-like reservoir allows the power supplies of the connected amplifier components to absorb even severe, short-term power spikes. These spikes occur during highly dynamic music or during powerful movie soundtracks with booming bass. If a power supply bottleneck occurs during such demanding moments, this becomes noticeable in the sound through a loss of dynamics. Therefore, a powerful power supply is generally the foundation for a top-quality amplifier.

The other four outlets are strictly separate from this one. They have their own filter circuit designed for source devices and preamplifiers. Due to the consistently low and mostly constant power requirements, current compression is not the primary concern here. Instead, the focus is on the low input level of the sensitive music signal and its higher gain. Therefore, more effort is required to suppress noise in the supply current. This is where the previously mentioned ultralinear filter combination comes into play. Common-mode noise filtering takes care of the difficult-to-filter common-mode interference. It reduces noise in the frequency range from 30 kilohertz to 100 megahertz. According to the datasheet, the filtering effect should be more than 22 decibels. Differential-mode noise filtering then handles the differential-mode interference. Compared to its smaller sibling, it is designed with a significantly wider bandwidth: While the 505 operates in this filter mode between 30 kilohertz and 100 megahertz, the 707 starts filtering at eight kilohertz and thus covers a much larger frequency band. The filtering effect is also said to exceed 22 decibels.

To prevent the PowerQuest 707 from having to clean a highly contaminated voltage caused by a low-quality, interference-prone cable, a high-quality power cord is included. This cord is designed for low noise and fast, low-loss power transmission. Beyond power purification, the 707 offers dual protection for all connected components: If the mains voltage exceeds 270 volts, the monitoring circuit's relay cuts off contact with all devices within a quarter of a second. As soon as the input current returns to normal, the connection is automatically restored. The 707 also protects all components from voltage and current spikes from the mains up to 6,000 volts and 3,000 amps – up to the household fuse rating. This overload protection is designed to be lossless and maintenance-free, meaning it is implemented without a fuse. The 707 is designed to withstand such overloads repeatedly and does so without the reset button found on its smaller siblings, the 303 and 505.

So how does power purification and energy buffering actually pay off when playing music in the listening room? Initially, not at all – because we're leaving the PowerQuest 707 out of the equation and powering our audio chain as poorly as possible: From the wall socket, we're going into two of the cheapest triple power strips, which we've also daisy-chained. They're powering our Transrotor Dark Star turntable, our Oppo UDP-203 SACD player , the Lumin P1 mini streaming player , and our Cayin Jazz 90 integrated amplifier , which is driving a pair of Audio Physic Midex speakers. We're listening to "Seven Days Of Falling" by the Esbjörn Svensson Trio – and despite the sloppy power supply, the melodic jazz number with piano, bass, and drums admittedly doesn't sound too bad: The instruments are quite present, details are clearly audible, and the overall sound is quite well-rounded. But we already know: There's definitely more potential here.

So we clear away the tangle of cables and wires and neatly connect all the components to the 707, with the Jazz 90 plugged into one of the three high-current outlets and all the other components into the source section connections. Now we start "Seven Days of Falling" again – and have an acoustic revelation. This begins even before bassist Dan Berglund opens the song, because the very subtle hiss that arises during vinyl playback due to scanning and preamplification is now even quieter. This allows Berglund's bass motif to shine through all the more: it consists of four notes with a short pause – and this interruption, precisely because of the now greater silence, has a significantly greater impact. But the bass itself also has a more assertive presence: its tone is more voluminous and powerful. We can now feel this surge physically, especially the low A-flat that Berglund plays in the sub-octave, which has fantastic resonance.

The next "aha" moment comes with the entrance of the piano: Esbjörn Svensson plays gentle chords, yet even his moderate pressing of the keys results in a clearer, more defined attack. Since the piano's entry coincides precisely with the bass's pause, these unexpected chords now unfold with greater impact. This is how the surprise, the compositional idea behind it, succeeds! Svensson plays these chords with a few additional notes; this addition makes the chords even more exciting – and now these notes are also much more audible because they are clearer, don't blur together, and don't overpower each other. The increased transparency and clarity make these sounds all the more fascinating: We now register more impressively how the different tones resonate through the piano's soundbox, how the many vibrations of the numerous buzzing strings overlap, sometimes reinforcing each other, sometimes thinning out – and thus a floating, shimmering, constantly changing overtone spectrum can be heard as the sound fades away.

We no longer hear only the notes being played on the piano, but also perceive the steel of the strings, the metal of the vibration-transmitting cast iron frame, and the wood of the resonating soundboard – in short, the materials and the physicality of this instrument. Therefore, it now feels to us as if we are standing at the open lid of a real grand piano. The difference is equally striking with the drums: Magnus Öström's drumming is minimalist and serves the song; he plays subtly and quietly with brushes. Previously, this sounded like a somewhat diffuse rustling; now, however, we notice that metal bristles are brushing against the snare drum – and we also hear how Öström varies the volume, how the strokes are weighted, and how he gradually increases the intensity of his playing as the song progresses. We hadn't experienced this build-up so impressively before. Here, in addition to greater precision, a gain in dynamics is also noticeable.

Now we want to enjoy this with a dedicated drum solo: "Stick To Me" by Charly Antolini. We first power the electronics through our cheap power strips, then through the 707 – and the difference makes us grin: the power boost significantly adds punch and power to Antolini's playing – and a freshness: it sounds as if the master is having even more fun. Now the furious excursions across the drum kit have their full impact. The strokes have more oomph, the impact of the sticks on the heads now has just the right, hard attack. The snare cracks and pops so loudly that we flinch at the rolls. The bass drum has a rich thump, yet sounds drier and more defined. The greater dynamics, precision, and definition make the drum kit sound more three-dimensional, more real. Even the large recording space where Antolini plays is more intensely perceptible due to the now more audible reflections from the studio walls.

The increased performance and energy output also pay off on a large orchestral scale: In the final Allegro of Gershwin's Piano Concerto, performed by world-class pianist Kirill Gerstein with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the interplay between piano and orchestra has significantly more brilliance and dynamism. The orchestral tutti sections impress with genuine explosiveness, the driving staccatos of the strings are audible with wonderfully sharp bow strokes, the staccato notes of the wind instruments now truly resonate, and the thunderous timpani strokes send shivers down our spines. Wow! The orchestral musicians are now also better and more spaciously positioned, possessing a greater presence, right down to the delicate triangle of the percussionist. This makes the rapid changes of entry, the back-and-forth between the various instruments and sections, even more breathtaking and exhilarating. This fuels Gerstein, who also plays the piano part with tremendous percussive power. Nevertheless, we can hear every keystroke of his tonal attacks during his incredibly fast runs and jumps across the keyboard.

As paradoxical as it sounds, despite this increased speed, the overall sound is simultaneously calmer, smoother, more coherent, and more relaxed. We experience all of this with our final track: "Kanskje" by Kari Bremnes. The synthesizer-rich, atmospheric piece only unfolds its full epic tranquility after the 707's power boost. This is also due to the bass: Whereas the rapidly successive, repetitive staccato bass notes, which run through the entire song like Morse code, previously sounded somewhat restless and unsteady, the now more substantial, powerful, and contoured bass sequences form a stoic, unshakeable foundation. Above this, various layers of sound now float with even greater clarity, freedom, and spaciousness. Kari Bremnes is now perfectly embedded within this: Her sonorous, pleasantly dark-timbred voice now sounds significantly more intimate and intense. The excellent reverb, which enhances her vocals, is now even more powerful, making Bremne's narration all the more impressive. The singer thus has an even greater presence – and completely captivates us.
